Chapter Ten

The next morning, Stephanie left the house to catch the bus when she noticed Jock’s SUV parked at the curb. Shane sat motionless behind the wheel. Was he waiting for her to give her a ride to work? If so, why hadn’t he called her to let her know he was out there or simply knock on the front door?

She walked over to the SUV and peered through the passenger side window. He was sleeping! Had he been there all night? If so, why?

She went back into the house, nuked a leftover cup of coffee, and marched back out the front door to wake him up. When she reached the vehicle, he jerked awake, looking around in blurry-eyed confusion at the tap-tap-tap of her knuckles on the window.

“Good morning,” she announced with curiosity as the glass silently slid down and disappeared into the door. She stepped on the running board and reached into the vehicle, offering him the mug of coffee. “Here—you look like you could use this.”

His eyes widened at the mist curling from the large, flat-bottomed mug. The rich aroma of French roast filled the car. “Thanks. Boy, does that smell good.” He accepted the mug and sat back, sipping the hot liquid as she walked around to the other side, opened the passenger door, and slid in.

“What are you doing here?” She dropped her purse on the floor and shut the door. “Have you been here all night?”

He merely grunted his answer, preoccupied with blowing on his coffee to cool it down.

Hmmm… she thought wryly. We’re not being very helpful. Are we grouchy, too?

She turned toward him, twisting at the waist. “Why did you sleep in the car? Are you on the outs with your parents or something?”

He shook his head. The reddish tinge of a day’s growth on his jaw proved he hadn’t been home, but it only added to his rugged image of a Hollywood stuntman. “I was worried about you, Stephanie. I couldn’t go home and leave you here alone.” His golden brows furrowed. “What if the thief came back and broke into your house while you were sleeping?”

She smiled inwardly. In a way, that was so sweet of him to be concerned about her, but the reality was, if the intruder came through the back way again, Shane would never have known about it. The guy would never get past the deadbolt on her front door and all of her windows were locked, so he would obviously try the back door again. It was old and the lock was much easier to jimmy. Her dad had been meaning to install a deadbolt in that one too but hadn’t gotten around to it yet.

“Why would he want to,” she replied quizzically. “He didn’t find anything the first time he broke in and he certainly didn’t find anything by digging up my yard.” She sighed in irritation. “That reminds me, I have a huge mess back there to clean up when I get home tonight.
